The simplest act of presence and kindness leaves a lasting impact. That’s the heart of volunteering.
Community gives us connection, purpose, and a place to belong. At Minnesota Hospice, our community is built around something deeply meaningful: the shared calling to walk alongside individuals and families during one of life’s most sacred journeys.
As a volunteer, you become part of a care team that includes nurses, social workers, chaplains, and support staff—all working together to ensure no one has to go through this experience alone. Whether a patient is in their own home, assisted living, memory care, or a skilled nursing setting, your presence can bring comfort, companionship, and peace of mind.
While we offer several types of volunteer roles, we believe your service should reflect who you are. We take the time to learn about your interests, life experiences, and the ways you feel called to contribute—then match you with opportunities that create meaningful connections for both you and the patients you support.
You’ll be guided, supported, and encouraged by a team who values your time, your heart, and your commitment. This isn’t just volunteering—it’s honoring life, presence, and purpose.
If you feel drawn to support people at the end of life and their loved ones, we’re here to help you explore what that could look like.
This volunteer position provides emotional support to patients and their families.
Volunteers listen to patients’ concerns and fears, provide a comforting and
supportive presence and could also help patients tell their life stories.
Another important support is providing the caregiver a break while you are present
with the patient.
The final days and hours of life is such a sacred time. This volunteer position provides a comforting bedside presence for the patient that may be alone.
Other times volunteers join family to provide support as they prepare for the death of their loved
one.
The Bereavement Support Volunteer provides support to families and caregivers during the bereavement period following the death of a hospice patient. The Bereavement Support Volunteer works in close contact with the Bereavement Coordinator.
This unique opportunity is for any person that has served in the military, in any
position. The volunteer role is to connect with fellow veteran patients, and provide
companionship during their end-of-life journey.
Volunteers who have well trained, well behaved pets may qualify to bring their furry companion to visit patients. We know that the presence of an animal may reduce anxiety and increase socialization among many other benefits. These visits are especially meaningful to patients who no longer have a pet living with them.

In addition in-person orientation is held with the Director of Volunteer and Community Engagement.

Minnesota Hospice works with every volunteer to meet both their needs and the needs of our patients. We ask volunteers to plan for 5-8 hours monthly. One-year commitments are encouraged, but not required. We are grateful for your gift of time.
